GREEN BRIGADE

A waste management initiative by
residents of Brigade Gardenia.

HOW OFTEN do we stop and think about something that doesn’t concern us directly?

As soon as we wake up we rush through our morning routines even as we brood over deadlines at work or things to do at home — or both. Heading to work on our chaotic roads is like stepping into a war zone and we thank our stars if we manage to make it in time for that 9 a.m. meeting. Our day progresses sometimes as planned, sometimes totally out of control. Before we know it, most of the cubicles around us are empty, a few lights have been switched off, and it’s time to head home through the same snarling traffic. Another trip through a war zone.

But as we enter our beautiful campus we forget all about the battles we fought and we start unwinding.

Some of the disturbing images that bother us during our commute — the pollution, the piles of garbage — are forgotten once we get home, which is a good thing for us but not for the planet.

So let us ask ourselves a few questions: What if the world outside the campus can be transformed into an extension of our campus? Do we think that is impossible? Are we too scared to commit time to such a venture? Or is it that we don’t know where to begin? Are we overwhelmed by the mere magnitude of this task? What if we approach this exercise by dividing it into simple tasks and attempting it from the comfort of our homes?

There’s no need to march out with gloves and brooms for a community clean-up drive — our contribution to the well-being of the planet can be as simple as segregating waste in our homes. This will surely give us the satisfaction of knowing that “We are doing our bit” and also help us to jump off the “We are like this only” bandwagon.

Please think about this and do let us know if you would like to join us and contribute in whatever small or big way you can. Remember: Little drops of water make an ocean!
